  1. THE BAIRD FAMILY BALL

  3. The Baird Family Ball is a silent, interactive animation that explores a family╒s idiosyncratic dynamics via themes of masquerade and motion.

  5. While at The Ball, the idea is to move spontaneously and impulsively among its seventeen scenes. Click, drag, or type freely anywhere that catches your attention and experience the results of your actions.

  7. In addition to moving through The Ball╒s scenes interactively, using the mouse and keyboard, you may select an Autoparty feature from the Operations menu, which will guide you through the scenes cinematically.

  9. The speed of The Baird Family Ball varies greatly from one computer to another, but the program tends to run slowly, especially when one scene replaces another. When you╒ve clicked on something, wait a few seconds for the result.

  11. If you don╒t want to miss any scenes or are curious about their interactive layout, look at the Map under the Info & Help menu. You can see where you╒ve been and plan where to go next.

For detailed instructions at any time, choose Help from the Info & Help menus. The Help panel is useful to anyone who wishes to know how The Ball is organized rather than click through it blindly. Experienced Macintosh and Windows users can skip the paragraphs that describe techniques of clicking, dragging, and text entry.

  16. Freedom Baird is an interactive media developer and dancer. Lately she has enjoyed working with writer-director Brendan Connoly, editing three short documentaries about special schools in New York City. She has performed as a dancer and drummer in New York, Ohio, and Dakar, Senegal. Freedom works as a designer for a CD-ROM publisher in New York.

  21. (Please forgive any over-explanation; I am writing for users of all experience levels.)

  23. The Baird Family Ball is a MacroMedia Projector file that runs on the Macintosh platform (the faster the Macintosh the better). The Ball╒s stage size is 640x480 pixels and should be viewed on a 13² monitor, although it will run on larger monitors.

  25. Set-up Instructions
  26. 1.     Set your monitor to 256 colors (in the Monitors control panel). To maximize speed, quit all open applications and close any open control panels. The speed of the program varies widely.

  28. 2.    Open the Info window of The Baird Family Ball. Change Current Memory Size from 5,000 to as much as your system can handle (e.g., if you╒ve got 12 MB of RAM set it to 10,000).

  30. The Help Panel Text
  31.  Ñ    Move through The Ball╒s scenes interactively by clicking images and menu choices. If the image you click is active, it will become highlighted and something will happen in the scene, or a new scene will appear. If the image is not active, nothing will happen.

  33. Ñ    In several scenes, such as ╥The Vows of Marriage╙ and ╥War,╙ the only way to exit is by choosing another scene from one of the menus.

  35. Ñ    In some scenes (╥Make a Mask╙) elements are moveable. To move an element, position the cursor over it, then click and hold the mouse button as you drag the element to its new position.

  37. Ñ In other scenes (╥Your Poem╙) text is editable. To add your own text, simply start typing.

  39. Ñ To return to the previous scene, choose ╥Return to Last Seen Scene╙ from the Operations menu.

Ñ Print screen contents at any time by choosing one of the print options from the Operations menu. ╥Print at Full Size╙ will give you an 8.8 x 6.7 inch image (cropped slightly at the right edge if your printer uses 8.5 x 11 inch paper). ╥Print at Half Size╙ will give you a 4.4 x 3.3 inch image, not cropped, but at a slightly lower resolution than the full-sized image.

Ñ    If you wish to skip the interactivity, you can view The Ball cinematically by selecting an Autoparty feature from the Operations menu. ╥Autoparty from the Top╙ will start The Ball at the beginning and run through all of the scenes. ╥Autoparty from Here╙ will start at the scene currently being viewed and run through the remaining scenes. During either of the two Autoparty modes, active objects are still clickable, and menus are still available.
